Everyone had been buzzing since the Daily Prophet reported in June about the writer of the ominous threats against quidditch at Hogwarts had been taken into custody, thus ending the over a decade long absence of the sport at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with groundskeeper and Flying instructor Haraldur Baldvinsson at the helm. It turned out to be quite the busy term for Mr. Baldvinsson as balancing his duties as groundskeeper, instructor, and quidditch official is no easy feat but a fulfilling one. This superhuman groundskeeper even stepped in to assist with Hufflepuff's tryouts at the start of the term!
Mr. Baldvinsson is a true visionary and his lessons this term were a reflection of just how much. Teaming up with Professor Vance, this unexpected duo hosted a lesson pairing Anemoscopy (divination by means of the observation of wind direction and strength, including the shape of dust clouds lifted by it) with Shuntbumps. But perhaps the best part, besides letting off some steam and knocking each other off their brooms, was that everyone who participated earned a Broom Servicing Kit! While reviews were mixed as to just how useful Anemoscopy was to the average and professional flyer, it was hard to leave the pitch with a frown after a productive afternoon of flying! Even when it came to lessons with emphasis on balance, Mr. Baldvinsson delivered. From balancing eggs on spoons while holding said spoon in your mouth WHILE flying on brooms (AND EVEN STANDING ON THEM WHILE DOING SO!) to a modified version of the muggle sport of rounders (congratulations on your victory, Hard-hitting Hippogriffs), each action and activity has been carefully selected to test multitasking skills, balance, agility and teamwork. All the essentials to fully mastering the art of flying!
While a very busy man, he always makes time for his students. Catching up with him in the igloo (don't try to lick the walls, your tongue will get stuck), I sat down with Mr. Baldvinsson to ask him a few questions about this monumental term at Hogwarts.
How does it feel to have quidditch make its triumphant return to Hogwarts under your watch?
It's something that has been in the works for a while. I am of course very honoured to be here to see it through. I'm sure the kids appreciate its return and we now have four Quidditch teams Hogwarts is proud to have.
How was it working with Zoryn, Isa, Kirk, and Skylar as captains? Any fun little anecdotes to share?
They're four individuals with very strong opinions for sure. But what happens between a coach and his captains is confidential. Let's just say there was a lot of rivalry (especially between two of them) and one minor fire.
This term Hogwarts hosted a job fair. Were you to have hosted your own booth, what job would you showcase and try to recruit us students towards? You're sorta a Jack of all trades here, you know? Groundskeeping, instructor, and quidditch official just to name a few!
Ah, yes the job fair. An exceptional opportunity for students to figure out what to do once the 7 years at Hogwarts come to an end. However, I was never the type of person to pursue only one job or one career so I'm afraid my booth at the job fair would be a confusing combination of several choices. How about a booth for adventuring?
Just how did those smart looking feathers you always wear in your hat come into your possession?
Ahem. I am not at liberty to say.
What is your favorite thing about the grounds at Hogwarts?
Apart from the igloo which I hold very close to my heart, I enjoy walking the pathways early in the morning before everyone wakes up. The calm is a nice contrast to the rest of the day which usually turns out relatively hectic.

First term as a Quidditch Captain! How does it feel?
Surreal. Honestly, I’ve dreamed of quidditch returning to Hogwarts since I was a first year, so the idea that it gets to return AND i get to be captain is pretty much a dream come true.
What was it like sitting in the Prefect’s compartment of the train?
Natural. Amazing. It helped that my very best friend was there from the previous year and then Flynn was there now too, so yea, definitely felt natural to be sitting alongside my fellow snake leaders and best friends.
Were you nervous or more excited to get started and round up a team?
Not really a fair question because I think it was natural to be BOTH excited and nervous. I wanted to be the best I could be, so there was that anxiety in making sure I rounded up the best for the team, but I was also excited about getting to play quidditch at Hogwarts.
Did you feel any extra pressure since we won the House Cup the year before?
Of course. I wanted to keep the house cup going for Slytherin, because we’d only lost it once since my first year so I knew i needed to keep on top of my academics as well.
You had a pretty good group of people come try out for Quidditch. Was it hard to narrow it down?
Yes and no. Professor Baldvinsson was very helpful in providing guidance for choosing the appropriate positions and players.
Did you ever struggle with favoritism? Or were you pretty good at keeping a level boss head?
I was a little nervous people might think I had favoritism by selecting Vivian as my seeker, which maybe I did, but she also happened to be a very good seeker, so I don’t really care what people thought.
What kind of quidditch ball do you relate to? Quaffle? Bludger? Or Snitch?
Bludger. Solid, tough, exterior, that can break bones, but can easily be swatted away with the right aim.
Do you want to play professionally after Hogwarts? If so, what’s your dream team?
Surprisingly … no. Quidditch has always been an exciting pastime and hobby for me, but I have no interest in playing professionally. I do love the recreational aspect and wouldn’t be opposed to playing for recreational purposes while in university and after.
You only have one term left at Hogwarts. Nervous? Excited?
Excited. While Hogwarts has been a great ride, I’m ready to leave the drama and dangers behind. But I’m also nervous in that I’ve got no idea what I want to do or where I want to go. I have a list that’s as long as my height.
Last question: if Quidditch wasn’t your biggest hobby right now, what would be?
Acting, probably. I think I did fairly decent in the school plays.

While the sport of Quidditch is widely popular around the wizarding world, outside of the official leagues, there hasn't been so much as a whisper around the castle. By now the students may not have been anticipating any sort of comeback...and yet here it was. The official return of an ancient sport. A special occasion to be sure. We got a sit down with the first captain Ravenclaw has seen in over a decade and this is his take on the whole thing:
It’s quite the interesting term, huh? First year of quidditch being back at Hogwarts in over a decade. That makes you Ravenclaw’s first Captain in all that time. How does that make you feel?
Felt nice. Being known as Captain Kirk was uplifting as well. Pun intended.
Did you ever think the sport would be brought back while you were at the school?
I was curious and entertained the idea, but the reality of it returning during my time was surprising.
With quidditch being gone for so long and not many students getting in any sort of practice with it, how hopeful would you say you were about tryouts and even the school league?
With odds like that, everyone was bound to be nervous and unsure. Once I thought of how the other teams would be in the same sort of position as well... I was motivated to make our team play hard and remain unforgettable.
How much of an adjustment would you say it was for you, suddenly having to fit practices in with your school schedule and social life?
Awkward at first. But my girlfriend Mel and dorm mates helped keep me on track with my studies.
Do you see yourself having a future outside of the school that’s rooted in the sport?
That would be nice. For now I'm leaving it up to the stars to guide me on where I go next.
Why d’you think you prefer the position of keeper?
You get to see most of the action and it's a rush getting to block or hit away the other team's shots.
What’s your least favourite position?
Have to say the Seeker. Not because the position isn't fun to play, but they have the most pressure put on them since they determine the entire game's outcome.
Would you say you were already in some sort of good form physically that prepared you for the position?
Yes.
Which house did you consider to be your biggest competition and why?
Slytherin. Their stats speak for themselves.
With the term over, d’you have any words you’d like to leave with your team?
Sure. You guys are all good and it was a fun season.

The Hufflepuff Quidditch team is a force to be reckoned with despite their reputations as a bunch of sweet-hearted push-overs, and that fact is the most proven when you see their Quidditch Captain Isa Wright in action. She zooms through the air with the same enthusiasm and ease in which she handles strange (and sometimes deadly) plants in herbology class, That’s right, Isa isn’t just a quality quidditch star but an ace herbologist to boot with dreams of pursuing her beloved hobby professionally in the future. Though the young woman had admitted in the past to having little experience in Quidditch or drafting a team she seemed to warm right up to both bringing heart, determination and will power in spades to a sport known - at times - to lack all three.
Though, ultimately, Hufflepuff came in last place, it could not be said that Isa Wright and her team did not give their all in their matches - a trait Isa carries with her whether on the pitch, in class or even when amongst her friend group. This perseverance is admirable, and worthy of a student leader - especially one related to former Head Girl Penelope Wright. Yes, the apple does not fall far from the sibling tree and I believe, quite fully, that we should expect a lot more from miss Isa Wright next term. Slytherin, Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw beware - Hufflepuff (and it’s small but fiery captain) are coming for you.

Quidditch Captain Zoryn Spinnet is a whirlwind of good hair, moving lips and an unstoppable spirit. She's young, more so than she looks or behaves but don't let that fool you. She's a fierce competitor, willing to go to any lengths to lead her team to victory (aside from, in my opinion, murder). I believe she could have made an excellent Slytherin were it not for her bravery and quick-draw attitude. I sat down with the curly haired beauty for a deeper look into the mind of a Quidditch Captain.
How do you feel about being a student leader?
Being a leader is what I was born to do. So obviously I’m really great at it AND I look great in a badge. Best part about being Quidditch Captain is that you’re still a student leader who gets to boss people around, but not the kind that has to be a stickler for the rules. It’s the role I was born to play.
What’s something you hate about Quidditch?
The pit stains.
If you had to make up a team with Professors (past and present) rather than students who would you pick and why?
My team would definitely have Coach B, Professor Hirsch, and Hawthorne. And we’d play against Professor Stewart, Wayland, and Myers because I’d love to send a good bludger or two at their faces.. Like, no offense or anything, but you can’t assign homework if you’re stuck in the hospital wing.
What’s your morning routine (your skin is always so nice!)?
Thanks, Julie, but skin like this doesn’t just happen to everyone. Honestly, I just woke up like this.
How do you get pumped up for a match?
Usually I listen to some TDK, fly around the pitch by myself in the morning, and mentally replay that epic time when I knocked Skylar Diggory right off her broom in one swift motion. ON A LOOP because it will never get old.
How do you balance Quidditch and school work? I know it’s been a problem for many of your teammates and rivals but you seem so laid-back. It’s like you truly don’t care.
It’s because I don’t. School doesn’t matter if you’re going into the professional league or into acting. And that’s what I’m going to do, so why bother? Plus worrying about school gives you spots and THAT’S the real secret to my skincare routine.
You and Faith Chosen are notoriously close, how do you two deal with the pressures of being on a team together? It even a problem at all?
Honestly, it’s not really a problem. It’d be pretty bad if we were opponents. But since we play for the same team, it’s easy.
Do you have quidditch stars you look up to? I know you’re a giant fan of Justine Janvier but I can’t say I’ve ever heard you mention anyone else you admire.
That’s because Justine Janvier is basically the only one that matters. BUT Alice Odessa is a pretty close number two, and she was the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain once too. Just saying.
Is there a position you would absolutely loath to play, and why?
Keeper (sorry, Faith). The best part about being beater is that you get to play the whole field. I like playing the field. But keepers are stuck by the hoops at all times. AND they don’t get to aim at anyone, where’s the fun in that? Not to be dramatic, but I’d literally rather take the Ancient Runes OWL or die.
How do you like your tea?
With a dash of sugar and scalding hot. Like me.
