hufflepuff head of house
Most people will agree that the role of Head of House, added to the regular duties of being a professor, can be enough to stretch anyone thin. Taking charge of a house and their overall well-being is no joke when those raging teenage hormones kick in and all hell breaks loose—emotionally or otherwise. Some may be daunted by the job description alone but not Professor Myers. On top of his regular duties and the added duties of caring for his house, the man is also able to find the time and energy to devote to one of the most demanding clubs in the castle; the drama club. It must be all that time with the house of the hard working. You know what they say about Hufflepuffs and toil. Of course, it could rightly be argued that not having been a Hufflepuff himself, he doesn’t handle a lot of work and the pressure it comes with very well—looking at you last year’s drama production—but then, being in charge of badgers doesn’t guarantee you’ll become one. To his credit, this years play wasn’t handled with the same amount of militant force and melodrama as the previous one and despite all the superstitions about dead Hufflepuffs, he hasn’t lost one yet. Even though it’s not clear if in the midst of all the dangers that befall Hogwarts the man has stumbled on a bout of extreme luck or it’s simply another indication of puffer resilience, the house of yellow is still standing. While they remain standing, they have the quirky Professor Myers to look out for them.
hufflepuff prefects
head girl
Compared to the rest of the school, Head Girl Henrietta Kramer had quite the calm term. During her final year, Etta had all her priorities straight and kept her focuses on her studies. She didn’t even go to the field trip in Dufftown! But that was probably for the best, considering the disaster that was. Etta managed to evade the bus crash, the possessions and all the danger that happened in Dufftown. Perhaps we should all be a bit more like Etta - then we wouldn't find ourselves in dangerous situations so often.
Etta has been one of our more kind hearted and compassionate Prefects, which likely comes from her Hufflepuff traits. It was always easy to get along with her and she’s the kind of leadert that staff members would never have to worry about using her prefect powers for selfish reasons! Maybe that’s why it will be a sad goodbye when the badge gets passed on next term!

I had the special opportunity to sit down with Hufflepuff's newest prefect, Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne and ask him some questions about his first term as a prefect. It's a daunting responsibility to take on, especially after some legendary prefects who went before, but I think it's safe to say that Derf did an excellent job. Read on to see what Derf had to say about leadership, Dufftown, and his responsibility as a prefect.
So, this was your first term as a Prefect. How did it feel getting that badge in the mail?
Um...the first time...I panicked, to be honest. Ended up accidentally dropping it near one of mum's flesh eating shrubs and...er...it kinda stayed there until about the third week of school when mum fetched it and mailed it to me. So...I was pretty embarrassed and relieved when I properly got it in the mail and actually got to wear the Hufflepuff badge instead of the Gryffindor one I had borrowed from mum's old Head of House things and applied a color changing charm on.
Did you feel any sort of pressure to live as a perfect role model or anything?
Oh yeah, for sure! I have Brian Woods and Henry Whittebrook to live up to, you know? I looked up to them both loads so being selected for prefect and having those roles reversed...where I am the one that others could potentially look to and look up to is surreal and kinda a lot to take on. Especially with my getting the badge my fourth year. So, uh, yeah...there was a lot of pressure I felt.
You walk into the Prefect’s Compartment for the first time... what are you feeling?
Like I wanted to leave immediately! I dunno, I sorta don't like having our own compartment and that being a privilege and stuff. I mean...it is nice and all being guaranteed a seat since compartments can fill up wicked fast, but I've always preferred to sit on the corridor floor on either end of the train.
What was your main goal going into your first year with some leadership in your hands?
I wanted to try and bridge the gap between professor and student voices. A lot of the time I sorta felt like I was seen and not heard, you know? But since Professor Myers saw fit to give me the badge, that meant I had more of a platform to stand on. Staff were more obligated to listen to me. So, yeah, that was my goal...strengthening communications between Hogwarts staff and students and visa versa.
What about that giant Prefect’s bathtub, huh?
It's really great! Historic too. Also get to practice my Mermish a bit with the mermaid portrait in there.
Okay, so now down to some more serious stuff. You went to that Dufftown trip and you were one of the ones that got possessed. What was going through your head when it was happening?
Nothing. I...um...hardly even remember what happened. All I really can recall is spotting the Williams twins, something with a bus....and then nothing. Next thing I knew I was being tugged along and portkeyed back to Hogwarts. That may be sorta the worse thing about it all, having no recollection of what you were doing or what you were saying. Your body...your mind...no longer your own.
How did you feel after you snapped out of it?
Confused. There was loads going on and so much noise...kinda felt nauseous. It wasn't until later when we were all back in Hogwarts that everything started sinking in. Made more than a few trips to the loo that night to try and settle my stomach.
Now that it’s long over, what do you look forward to for next term?
More quidditch and more private magizoology lessons with Professor Wayland. Been really neat to learn from him about how to heal and rehabilitate various creatures. Inspiring too, you know?
Speaking of the future, I’m sure I’m not the only who wants to know: what do you want to do after Hogwarts?
I've always known I want to go into magizoology and everyone knows I wanna be just like Newt Scamander. Well, not JUST like him...cause I still wanna be me, but I want to follow in his footsteps as a renowned magizoologist. But I wasn't really sure what specifically that meant until this term. So, I sorted that I want to go into healing. Newt Scamander meets Doctor Dolittle, kinda.
Last but not least: if you could be any kind of tree for one day, what kind of tree would you be?
Luckily for me...I already am one. A Home Tree.
